Chris Tiu Remembers Meeting Pope Francis: “One of the Highlights of My Life”

MANILA — Former basketball star and TV host Chris Tiu shared a touching tribute to Pope Francis following the pontiff’s passing earlier this week, recalling their memorable encounter in Vatican City back in 2015.

Taking to Instagram, the “iBilib” host posted a photo from their meeting during a Papal Audience. The image shows Chris and Pope Francis warmly smiling and holding hands—a moment that left a lasting impact on Tiu.

“Your life of service and unwavering loyalty to God & the Church has inspired me and so many others,” Tiu wrote. “You have championed inclusivity, mercy, simplicity, charity, peace, and love—exactly what the world needs.”

Tiu revealed that whenever he feels lost or uncertain, he draws strength from the pope’s teachings. He also recalled how Pope Francis handed him a rosary and asked him to always pray for him, a gesture that moved him deeply.

“I remember feeling stunned, as if I had met a saint. That moment inspired me to live with more kindness and holiness,” he shared. “This is one of the highlights of my life, and I will cherish it forever. Rest in peace, our dearest Pope Francis.”

Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88 due to a stroke and heart failure. His body now lies in state at St. Peter’s Basilica ahead of his funeral on Saturday.
