Nora Aunor, National Artist and ‘Superstar’ of Philippine Cinema, Dies at 71

Nora Aunor, the beloved “Superstar” of Philippine cinema and a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, passed away at age 71 while undergoing a heart procedure—just weeks before her 72nd birthday in May.

Her son, actor Ian de Leon, confirmed her death in a heartfelt Facebook post, describing her as “the heart of our family… a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth.” He added, “She will be missed beyond words and remembered forever.”

Aunor, born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor, had long battled health issues, which also led her to withdraw from her 2025 party-list candidacy. In previous interviews, she shared the challenges she faced, including a near-death experience in 2023 and losing her iconic singing voice due to a botched surgery in Japan.

Known as “Ate Guy” and “La Aunor,” her legendary career spanned decades. From winning Tawag ng Tanghalan in 1967 to starring in classics like Himala, Bona, and Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo, Aunor proved herself a force in acting, music, and live television. She also headlined the long-running variety show Superstar.

Beyond the screen, she was a complex figure—both celebrated and scrutinized. Her family life had its challenges, including publicized disagreements with her children, though she eventually reconciled with daughter Matet.

Aunor was officially conferred the title of National Artist in 2022 after years of public clamor. Despite health setbacks, she continued to act, earning accolades for her recent work in Pieta, and expressing her deep love for the craft in what would be some of her final interviews.

She is survived by her children Ian, Lotlot, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth, as well as grandchildren. Her passing marks the end of an era for Filipino entertainment—a loss mourned by fans, peers, and the nation she inspired.
