Pope Francis Hopes to Deliver Easter Blessing Amid Ongoing Recovery

Pope Francis, who is currently recuperating after a critical battle with pneumonia, intends to deliver the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (To the City and the World) blessing on Easter Sunday, the Vatican announced Thursday. However, it remains uncertain whether he will participate in other Holy Week events.

The 88-year-old pontiff returned to the Vatican on March 23 after spending five weeks in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Doctors advised him to rest for at least two months, raising questions about his availability for this year’s Easter celebrations, which culminate on April 20.

The Vatican’s schedule confirms the Easter blessing will be included but doesn’t specify the pope’s role in other liturgical activities such as the Holy Thursday Mass or the Stations of the Cross. Traditionally, only the pope can give the “Urbi et Orbi” blessing, though it could be delivered via livestream if necessary.

Since his hospitalization, senior cardinals have taken over leading masses. Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin said Pope Francis is following doctors’ orders and avoiding public engagements to prioritize his recovery.

Despite concerns, the Vatican has not suggested resignation is on the horizon. Parolin acknowledged that while the pope may not return “as before,” he is still capable of leading the Church, possibly in new ways.

The canonization of Carlo Acutis on April 27 remains on the Vatican calendar. Only the pope can officially declare a new saint.
