Bam Aquino Opposes Forced Tricycle Modernization Without Government Support

MANILA – Former Senator Bam Aquino has spoken out against the forced modernization of tricycles, emphasizing that any transition to electric tricycles (e-trikes) must come with affordable options and safeguards for drivers’ livelihoods.

During a dialogue with tricycle drivers in Quezon City on Tuesday, Aquino stressed that while modernization is necessary, it should not result in job losses or financial burdens.

“If you are going to be required to modernize, there should be a program that ensures you can obtain an affordable unit without disrupting your earnings,” he said.

He further assured tricycle drivers:
“We won’t allow you to lose your livelihoods. We will fight for your right to work and earn a decent living.”

Balancing Modernization and Livelihoods

Aquino also pointed out that the growing motorcycle taxi industry should not push tricycles out of the market, as they continue to provide affordable and accessible transport services.

His remarks come amid increasing concerns from tricycle operators about the cost of e-trikes, which many fear could displace small operators if the transition is rushed without financial aid.

With the 2025 Philippine elections approaching, Aquino’s stance aligns with other political discussions on transport modernization and livelihood protection.
