PNP Deploys K-9 Units to Ensure Safety During ‘Pagpupugay’ for Nazareno 2025

The Philippine National Police – Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Group (PNP-EOD/K9G) has deployed six K-9 units at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila to enhance public safety during the “Pagpupugay” and “Pahalik” activities for Nazareno 2025.

Regular Safety Patrols

According to EOD Technical Director Alvin Macalanda, the K-9 units patrol the area every two hours to detect explosives or other potential threats.

“We want to ensure the safety of the devotees. Every two hours, we conduct rounds at the Quirino Grandstand,” he said.
“If the dogs detect explosives, they will signal by sitting.”

The Explosive Incident Response Team (EIRT) has also prepared safety procedures to address any possible threats.

Faster Procession for Devotees

As thousands of devotees continue to visit the Quirino Grandstand, the current system has improved efficiency compared to previous years.

According to Alex Irasga, technical advisor for the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, the faster process is due to the prohibition of kissing the image of Jesus Nazareno.

“In the past, it would take hours to get close to the image. Now, devotees simply wipe the image with handkerchiefs or towels, which speeds up the line,” Irasga explained.

A Safe and Peaceful Celebration

Irasga noted that activities so far have been peaceful and orderly. He emphasized the Church’s message for the event to remain a holy and safe celebration, not an act of extreme penitence.

“This is a celebration, not a form of penitence or self-inflicted hardship. The Church aims to make it a holy and safe occasion.”

As preparations continue for the culmination of Nazareno 2025, authorities are focused on ensuring both the spiritual and physical well-being of millions of devotees.
