Maris Racal Returns to Social Media, Promotes Film Amid Controversy

Maris Racal has returned to social media after weeks of hiatus following a cheating controversy involving her and on-screen partner Anthony Jennings.

On January 4, Racal posted on her Instagram story to promote her film “Sunshine,” which is part of the 36th Palm Springs International Film Festival. She shared the movie’s poster and encouraged followers to purchase tickets for its screenings.

“Hello, Palm Springs International Film Festival! Get your tickets now,” Racal wrote.

“Sunshine”: A Rising Film Festival Favorite

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, Sunshine follows the story of a young gymnast, played by Racal, who discovers she is pregnant before her national team tryouts and faces the dilemma of abortion.

  • The film also stars Annika Co, Jennica Garcia, Elijah Canlas, Meryll Soriano, and Xyriel Manabat.
  • Sunshine premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2024 and was nominated for Best Youth Film at the 2024 Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Controversy and Apologies

Racal’s social media return comes after being embroiled in a cheating controversy in December 2024.

  • Jam Villanueva, the non-showbiz ex-girlfriend of Jennings, accused him of infidelity by sharing screenshots of his intimate conversations with Racal.
  • Racal admitted her involvement with Jennings, explaining that she was misled into believing he had ended his previous relationship.
  • Jennings publicly apologized to both Villanueva and Racal, expressing regret for the pain caused.

Moving Forward

While the controversy continues to spark discussions, Racal is focusing on her professional achievements, with Sunshine receiving international recognition before its Philippine release.
