Forty-two years after the release of the critically acclaimed Himala, Senator Imee Marcos fondly recalled the remarkable professionalism of its lead actress, Nora Aunor.
Speaking during a recent forum, Marcos shared how Aunor, despite challenges, embodied the character of Elsa in the Ishmael Bernal-directed film. Marcos, who served as director general of the now-defunct Experimental Cinema of the Philippines, emphasized that only Aunor could do justice to the role.
“The only one who could portray Elsa was Nora Aunor. The problem was, her life and contracts were messy at the time,” Marcos said, explaining that Aunor’s commitments to another studio initially hindered her participation.
Overcoming Challenges on Set
Marcos recounted production hurdles, including Aunor missing a shoot due to personal issues. This led to a decision to implement a lock-in taping in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. Despite these setbacks, Aunor’s dedication shone through.
“She was always on time, ready to roll. Even after a road accident where she sustained injuries, she insisted on showing up for the shoot. She truly was a trooper,” Marcos recalled.
Legacy of Himala
The senator also highlighted the enduring impact of Himala, noting its transformation into a stage musical and now a musical film titled Isang Himala, an entry in the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). “It warms my heart that the story of Himala remains significant. I’m looking forward to this new adaptation,” she said.
Himala made history as a 1982 MMFF entry, winning nine awards, including Best Film, Best Actress for Aunor, and Best Director for Bernal. The iconic film continues to inspire adaptations and accolades decades after its release.
