Veteran TV host Boy Abunda has shared his thoughts on the controversy surrounding Maris Racal and her on-screen partner Anthony Jennings. The actress has faced public backlash after screenshots of her intimate messages with Jennings were leaked by his non-showbiz ex-girlfriend, Jamela Villanueva.
On Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, aired on Dec. 6, Abunda questioned the disproportionate criticism directed at Racal, particularly over societal double standards regarding women’s behavior.
Challenging Gender Bias
“Bakit sobra ang galit natin kay Maris?” Abunda asked. “Is it because there is no place in Philippine society for women who are aggressive, who make the first move, or who openly express their feelings? If a man had initiated these exchanges, would the reaction have been the same?”
He also emphasized the need to respect privacy, noting, “These conversations were meant to be private.”
Highlighting a “Hole” in Racal’s Statement
While Abunda commended Racal’s courage in addressing the issue in a 14-minute video, he pointed out a perceived inconsistency in her claim that she was unaware Jennings and Villanueva were still together.
Abunda referenced a part of the leaked conversation where Racal allegedly asked Jennings to delete their messages, suggesting an awareness of the potential consequences. “To say that you didn’t have any knowledge that they were still together, medyo kine-kwestyon ko as an audience; as a commentator,” he remarked.
Despite this critique, Abunda acknowledged Racal’s bravery in confronting the controversy head-on.
Professional Fallout
The controversy has also affected Racal professionally. A makeup brand she previously endorsed announced the end of their partnership, citing the need to align with the brand’s principles. Additionally, netizens observed that a coffee brand featuring Racal and Jennings had removed related social media posts, though no statement has been issued.
Apologies from Jennings
Anthony Jennings has since apologized to both Racal and Villanueva, expressing regret for the pain caused but refraining from further elaboration on the matter.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it highlights the challenges of navigating public scrutiny in the age of social media and the enduring societal expectations placed on women in the spotlight.
