Bong Halius, a young man from Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur, has become the subject of public attention due to his kind-hearted nature and resilience despite living with a severely swollen left arm that weighs five kilos.
Bong, who lives with relatives in Sitio Tuburan, helps with chores such as cleaning, fetching water, and planting crops. However, his swollen arm, which has grown progressively larger since childhood, has caused physical pain and challenges in his daily life.
Struggles and Challenges
In a feature aired on Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS), Bong shared the difficulties he faces, including constant pain during physical activities, finding clothes that fit, and sleeping comfortably.
“When I work, it hurts,” he said. “I sleep sideways; my arm sometimes just stays straight.”
The teasing he endures in public has affected his confidence, leading him to withdraw from social activities and stop attending school after just one day in Grade 1.
Mystery of a “Twin”
Bong’s mother, Planie, believes his condition may be linked to a twin she claims was born with him but disappeared shortly after birth. She speculated that an “elemental” presence may have cursed him.
However, medical specialists debunked this theory, diagnosing Bong with lymphatic obstruction, a condition where blockages in the lymphatic system cause abnormal swelling in the skin and tissues.
Hope for Treatment
With the help of KMJS, Bong consulted a doctor who recommended further tests, including a biopsy, chest CT scan, and vascular study, to assess the severity of his condition and determine treatment options.
The local government of Lakewood has stepped in to assist, providing Bong with a sleeping kit, hygiene essentials, solar lighting, and prioritization in medical checkups and livelihood programs.
