The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has expanded its probe to include an alleged threat to Vice President Sara Duterte’s life. This comes alongside its investigation into her controversial statement suggesting she ordered the killing of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez in the event of her assassination.
Alleged Threats
“She is also claiming that there is a threat on her life. We will not take that for granted,” NBI Director Jaime Santiago said during a briefing.
The vice president, initially expected to appear at the NBI, was instead represented by her lawyer, who requested a rescheduling of the hearing. The new date has been set for December 11 to allow Duterte time to prepare.
Questions to Address
Santiago stated that the NBI intends to question Duterte about any suspects she may have and whether evidence supports her claims.
Subpoenas Issued
The NBI will issue subpoenas to 10–12 individuals who were present at Duterte’s late-night press conference, where she made the contentious remarks. Only active participants who asked questions or engaged during the event will be called to testify.
Context of Duterte’s Statement
Duterte previously asserted that her remarks regarding the Marcoses and Romualdez were “maliciously taken out of logical context.”
No Impeachment Support from Marcos
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has dismissed any impeachment plans against Duterte, emphasizing that such efforts are insignificant and do not impact the lives of Filipinos.
“This is not important. This does not make any significant difference to one Filipino life,” Marcos remarked.
