Gallant Sam Catantan Falls to Top-Seeded Arianna Errigo, Ends Paris Olympics Run

In a valiant effort, Sam Catantan bowed out of the Paris 2024 Olympics after a narrow defeat to world No. 2 and top-seeded Arianna Errigo of Italy. Catantan, ranked No. 266 globally, lost 15-12 in their Table of 32 bout in the women’s foil individual event held at the Grand Palais on Sunday.

Catantan was coming off a remarkable 15-13 victory over Brazilian Mariana Pistoia in the Table of 64, igniting hopes for a deep run at the Summer Games. Despite her loss, the 22-year-old Filipino fencer put up a formidable fight against the experienced Errigo.

Brave Performance

Catantan started strong, recovering from an initial four-point deficit to score five consecutive points, taking a 5-4 lead against the taller Italian. However, Errigo, drawing on her extensive Olympic experience, dominated the second round, pulling ahead with a 13-9 lead after a series of powerful lunges in the final seconds of the frame.

Relentless Fight

Refusing to give up, Catantan closed the gap to 12-14, showing remarkable resilience. Nonetheless, Errigo secured the victory with a final decisive attack, advancing to the Table of 16.

Olympic Journey

Catantan’s performance, especially considering her world ranking and the caliber of her opponent, was commendable. Her participation in the Olympics, marked by a significant win over Pistoia and a close contest with Errigo, has been a source of pride and inspiration for many.
