The Philippine Air Force is intensifying pilot training as it prepares to acquire over 20 multi-role fighter jets to modernize its capabilities and strengthen joint operations with the navy. This move comes as part of the nation’s efforts to bolster its defense amid regional tensions.
Enhanced Training and Multinational Exercises
For the first time, Philippine pilots are participating in the Pitch Black war games, a multinational exercise involving 20 Indo-Pacific and European countries in northern Australia. These exercises, which consume a million liters of aviation fuel daily, involve fighter jets from the US, UK, Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and others, testing war tactics and skills.
Colonel Randy Pascua, commander of the Philippine contingent, mentioned that the country brought four of its 12 South Korean-built FA-50 fighter jets to the games. The Philippines is currently evaluating more advanced jets for its modernization program.
Government Approval for Advanced Jets
AFP Chief of Staff Romeo Brawner announced that the Philippine government had approved the decision to purchase “faster and more lethal” multi-role jets, as the FA-50 is deemed insufficient for national defense. However, the specific type and quantity of jets have yet to be determined.
Closing the Technological Gap
Pascua emphasized the need to enhance pilot skills to bridge the “big technological gap” as the Air Force modernizes its fighter jet fleet. “If we have to acquire more than 20 multi-role fighters, we really need to step up,” he stated. The aim is to train and enhance operational capability, as the Philippines had lost significant air defense capabilities over the decades.
Strengthening International Partnerships
Participation in the Pitch Black exercises is seen as a way to strengthen international partnerships and reaffirm the Philippines’ commitment to regional security and stability. The Air Force’s focus is on maritime domain awareness in collaboration with the navy, especially amid ongoing tensions with Beijing over the disputed South China Sea.
Regional Tensions
The Philippines and China remain in a standoff over territorial claims in the South China Sea. Encounters have become increasingly tense as China asserts its claims over shoals within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
