Tesla Unveils Advanced Humanoid Robot: Optimus Gen 2

Tesla | Optimus Prime

Tesla has introduced its second-generation Optimus humanoid robot, showcasing significant improvements over the previous model that made a clumsy debut at the company’s AI event last year.

In a video posted on Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s social media platform X, the Optimus Gen 2 is seen flexing its fingers and hands, walking through Tesla’s factory, doing squats, and even picking up eggs with precision.

The video ends with two robots raising their hands to club music, demonstrating the robot’s dance capabilities in a typical Musk fashion.

While there are still many questions regarding the robot’s practical applications and Tesla’s integration of AI technology, the new model is a clear upgrade from previous versions. However, it remains to be seen if these robots will replace human workers in the near future.

Walking on Eggshells

According to Tesla, the Optimus Gen 2 can walk 30 percent faster and is 22 pounds lighter than its predecessor. The robot’s hands are a focal point, featuring tactile sensors on each fingertip for careful handling of objects.

Elon Musk emphasized the importance of the Optimus project, predicting that it will eventually represent a significant portion of Tesla’s long-term value. He suggested that the robot could be priced under $20,000 each and could soon begin replacing production staff in Tesla’s factories.

However, given Tesla’s need to prove the practical utility of its dexterous robot, widespread adoption seems unlikely in the immediate future.
