Study Suggests Organ Transplants May Alter Personality and Sexual Orientation

Unexpected Consequences of Organ Transplants

Scientists have discovered that organ transplants can lead to unexpected changes, including shifts in personality and sexual orientation.

Study Insights

In a study of 47 participants, 89% reported personality changes post-transplant, regardless of the organ received. These changes ranged from new food preferences to alterations in intimacy and career interests. Published in Transplantology, the research from the University of Colorado highlights profound psychological impacts, including “enhanced social and sexual adaptation” and “spiritual or religious episodes.”

Surprising Findings

Six participants noted changes in their sexual preferences. Some even reported memories seemingly transferred from their donors, suggesting deep cognitive and emotional effects from the transplants.

Mixed Reactions

While some changes were positive, like improved social adaptation, others were negative, including depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction.

Alternative Explanations

The observed changes might stem from improved health post-surgery rather than personality traits transferred from donors. Coauthor Mitch Liester noted that better physical health could explain many of the changes.

Study Limitations

The study’s small sample size and potential selection bias—where participants who experienced changes were more likely to join—mean more research is needed to draw definitive conclusions.
