Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has instructed the swift execution of the amnesty program targeting the residual members of communist insurgent groups, as confirmed by National Security Adviser Eduardo Año. This directive follows the 5th meeting of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), emphasizing the government’s commitment to peace and reconciliation.
The amnesty program, now open for applications, extends to former combatants of groups like the Rebolusyonaryong Partido ng Manggagawa ng Pilipinas/Revolutionary Proletarian-Army/Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPMP-RPA-ABB), Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF), Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). Currently, 1,500 individuals have applied for amnesty, with the government aiming to reintegrate 40,000 former rebels who have surrendered.
This program forms part of the broader initiative to neutralize ongoing insurgencies and facilitate the reintegration of former rebels into society. The Philippine military continues to conduct operations to dismantle remaining guerilla fronts and counter various threat groups actively.
The amnesty initiative has received legislative backing, with the Senate recently adopting resolutions to formalize the grant of amnesty to former members of these insurgent groups. Additionally, the Barangay Development Program (BDP) has been initiated to foster development in areas previously under rebel influence, marking a significant investment in peace and community restoration across the nation.
