The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has confirmed that “Killua,” a golden retriever beaten to death by a watchman in Bato, Camarines Sur, tested positive for rabies. The incident occurred after the dog allegedly attacked and bit an elderly woman. PAWS has urged those who came into contact with Killua, including its owner Vina Arazas, to get vaccinated against rabies.
The authenticity of the rabies test results is under scrutiny due to potential contamination, as Killua’s body was buried for five days in an area known for dog slaughters before the examination. PAWS has emphasized the importance of reporting any related bites or scratches to safeguard public health.
In response to the dog’s death, PAWS plans to pursue criminal charges against the watchman for violating animal welfare and anti-rabies laws, especially since the incident involved the suspected selling of dog meat. The community is also being alerted to the health risks associated with consuming dog meat from the area.
