The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced a significant change in traffic policy affecting e-bike, e-trike, and tricycle users in the National Capital Region (NCR). Starting April 15, these modes of transportation will no longer be allowed on national roads throughout Metro Manila. This move aims to enhance road safety and manage traffic flow more efficiently in the bustling metropolis.
The MMDA specified the national roads where the ban will be strictly enforced, which include major thoroughfares such as Roxas Boulevard (R1), Taft Avenue (R2), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX, R3), Shaw Boulevard (R4), Ortigas Avenue (R5), and several others. The ban extends to key circular roads like Recto Avenue (C1), Pres. Quirino Avenue (C2), and the heavily trafficked Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA, C4), among others.
This policy adjustment comes as part of the MMDA’s ongoing efforts to regulate traffic and ensure the safety of all road users in Metro Manila. By restricting slower and more vulnerable forms of transportation from busy national roads, the authority aims to reduce traffic congestion and minimize the risk of accidents.
E-bikes, e-trikes, and tricycles play a vital role in the urban transport system, offering affordable and accessible mobility options for many residents. However, their use on fast-paced national roads poses safety concerns due to their lower speeds and vulnerability compared to larger vehicles. This ban encourages these transportation modes to utilize secondary roads and designated lanes, aligning with traffic management and urban planning principles aimed at creating a safer and more organized road network in the NCR.
As the implementation date approaches, users of e-bikes, e-trikes, and tricycles are advised to plan their routes accordingly and stay informed about alternative roads that remain open to their vehicles. The MMDA’s initiative reflects the balance between promoting sustainable urban mobility and ensuring the safety and efficiency of the capital region’s roadways.
