Efren Esmilla Becomes First Filipino Bishop of Philadelphia Advocates Compassionate Service

In a historic moment for the Filipino community and the Catholic Church in the United States, Efren Esmilla was ordained as the new auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia, marking him as the first Filipino to hold this prestigious position in the state’s archdiocese. The ordination ceremony, held at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, was a momentous occasion, attended by bishops and Filipino priests from across America.

At 61 years old, Esmilla joins the ranks as the fourth Filipino bishop in the United States, emphasizing the importance of service rooted in compassion during his ordination. His message resonates with the core of Christian values, tying the act of serving others to a deeper, soulful connection. Esmilla’s episcopal motto, “Sicut qui ministrat,” which translates to “As one who serves,” encapsulates his commitment to embodying this principle throughout his ministry.

Appointed by Pope Francis alongside Keith Chylinski and Christopher Cooke, Esmilla’s ordination comes nearly three months after their nomination. They are tasked with supporting Archbishop Nelson Perez in guiding one of the largest archdioceses in the country, boasting a membership of approximately 1.5 million.

Reflecting on his new role, Esmilla invites the faithful to join him as “pilgrims of hope and joy,” viewing his ordination not as the culmination but as the commencement of a new chapter in his spiritual journey. Expressing humility and gratitude for the trust placed in him, Esmilla vows to strive for worthiness every day.

The ceremony, which spanned three hours, featured hymns in Filipino, English, and Spanish, highlighting the diverse heritage and unity within the Catholic community. Among the distinguished guests were Bishop Oscar Solis of Salt Lake City, the first Filipino bishop appointed in America, and Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara of Pasig, showcasing the growing influence and contribution of Filipino leaders in the Catholic Church in the United States.

Esmilla’s ordination was celebrated not only by members of the clergy but also by the Filipino community, friends, and family, underscoring the significant role and faith the Filipino diaspora contributes to the Roman Catholic Church in America. Born in Nagcarlan, Laguna, and a graduate of San Beda University, Esmilla’s journey from the Philippines to the United States has culminated in a historic achievement that stands as a testament to the vibrant faith and energy of Filipinos abroad.
