The Boston Celtics have solidified their position as a formidable contender for the NBA championship with a resounding 140-88 victory over the Golden State Warriors. This win, a rematch of the 2022 NBA Finals, has been highlighted by Steve Kerr, Warriors’ coach, who acknowledged the Celtics’ current form as the strongest iteration of the team he has encountered.
The Celtics’ 11th consecutive win brings their season record to an impressive 48-12, the best in the NBA, and sets them on a trajectory for potentially 65 wins. This achievement would rank as the fourth most in the franchise’s storied history and the most since the 2008 team clinched the 17th NBA championship. The 52-point margin against the Warriors marks the third-largest in Celtics history and makes them the first NBA team to secure three 50-point wins within a single season.
The game saw the Celtics lead by 44 points at halftime, setting a new franchise record for the largest halftime lead. Their performance against Golden State is only surpassed by a 56-point victory against Chicago in 2018 and a 53-point win over Sacramento in 2022.
Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum led the charge for the Celtics, scoring 29 and 27 points, respectively. Payton Pritchard also made a significant contribution with 19 points off the bench. The Celtics’ overwhelming lead allowed coach Joe Mazzulla to rest his starters early in the third quarter, showcasing the depth and talent of the team.
The Warriors, on the other hand, struggled throughout the game, with star player Stephen Curry finishing with a season-low four points and failing to make any of his nine 3-point attempts. Curry’s performance echoed the team’s overall difficulty, describing the match as a “perfect storm” of challenges for Golden State.
Under the guidance of coaches Brad Stevens, Ime Udoka, and now Joe Mazzulla, the Celtics have consistently challenged for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, reaching the finals three times in four seasons from 2017-2020 and again in 2022. With strategic off-season trades, including the acquisition of Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday, the team has bolstered its roster, with Brown affirming this group as the best he’s been part of.
As the playoffs approach, the Celtics’ recent performance, coupled with their strategic enhancements, positions them as a strong candidate to break through and claim the NBA title, marking what could be a historic season for the franchise.
