Proposal for “National Single Awareness Day” Leave on February 15

A novel legislative proposal, the “Singles Well-Being Leave Act,” has been introduced by Cagayan de Oro First District Representative Lordan Suan, aiming to grant singles a day off from work every February 15, designated as “National Single Awareness Day.” This initiative seeks to spotlight mental health awareness within the workplace and support the emotional well-being of single employees, potentially enhancing their productivity.

The proposal has sparked a mix of reactions. The Employer’s Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) acknowledges the positive intention behind the bill but questions the efficacy of a single day’s leave in addressing personal challenges. ECOP President Sergio Luis expressed concerns about complicating business operations and the potential for widespread leave applications, regardless of actual need.

Psychologist Lilian Ng Gui notes a shift in societal views on being single, especially post-pandemic, with singles feeling more empowered and fulfilled. She questions the specific impact of the leave, suggesting a broader approach to emotional well-being that includes all individuals, regardless of their relationship status. Gui emphasizes the importance of addressing the diverse challenges faced by different segments of the population, including married, senior, and widowed individuals.

This proposal highlights the ongoing dialogue about mental health in the workplace and the search for innovative ways to support employee well-being across different life stages and situations.
