This morning at 10 AM, a trailer truck was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on San Mateo-Batasan Road, as captured by CCTV in Barangay Batasan. Initially proceeding slowly and passing through the intersection of Lower Congressional smoothly, the truck’s speed noticeably increased as it descended the road. Eventually, it veered onto the center island, colliding with several vehicles in its path.
The impact of the collision was so strong that the first vehicle hit by the truck spun around, as shown in the CCTV footage. Additionally, the rear of a multi-purpose vehicle was struck by the trailer truck.
A barangay traffic enforcer, who was among the first responders at the scene, recounted that the truck lost its brakes, leading to the driver’s loss of control. “The driver said he lost control of the truck’s brakes, causing him to steer to the left, but it was too late even though he maximized his truck’s brakes, leading to the collision with the oncoming vehicles,” said enforcer Arjhay Omega.
A motorcycle rider was reported injured from the accident, while no injuries were reported from the occupants of the other vehicles involved. The truck driver is currently in custody of Traffic Sector 5.
Efforts to obtain the driver’s side of the story were unsuccessful as the traffic sector investigator did not permit communication.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and the potential dangers of brake failure, especially for large vehicles like trailer trucks navigating downhill roads.
