The Inter-Agency Council for the Pasig River Urban Development (IAC-PRUD) has announced an ambitious plan to construct eight additional esplanades along the 25-kilometer stretch of the Pasig River, following the successful launch of a riverside esplanade last month. This initiative, spearheaded by Housing Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar, aims to transform the river into a vibrant public space that enhances both tourism and transportation connectivity in Manila.
The recent unveiling of the esplanade behind the Manila Central Post Office by President Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos marked the beginning of a project that seeks to breathe new life into the Pasig River. Acuzar emphasized that the endeavor is more than a beautification effort; it’s a comprehensive plan to reinstate the river as a critical artery in the nation’s capital, supporting both recreational and functional purposes.
Central to this vision is the Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli project, launched by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development alongside the IAC-PRUD. This project aims to rejuvenate the river, which serves as a natural link between Manila Bay and Laguna de Bay, through the introduction of nine uniquely themed sections. Each segment will offer a variety of activities and aesthetic experiences, catering to diverse interests and promoting a richer engagement with the river’s natural beauty and utility.
The initiative represents a significant step towards urban renewal and the enhancement of living conditions in Manila. By focusing on the Pasig River’s potential as a hub for tourism and urban transit, the government is not only acknowledging its historical significance but also its future role in the metropolitan landscape. The development of additional esplanades promises to create accessible, enjoyable public spaces for residents and visitors alike, fostering a sense of community and environmental stewardship in the heart of the city.
