Safe and Sound: Filipino Crew Members in Iran After Tanker Seizure

In a recent development that has brought relief to many, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed that 18 Filipino crew members of the Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker St. Nikolas are safe and currently in Iran. The tanker was seized by Iran in the Gulf of Oman, raising concerns about the safety of the crew.

The Filipino seafarers were taken into custody by Iranian authorities. Both the DMW and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) are actively engaged in negotiations with Iranian officials to secure the release of the Filipino crew. Additionally, the tanker management company, Empire Navigation, is in constant contact with the relevant Greek and international authorities, as well as the families of the crew members.

To support the families during this challenging time, Empire Navigation has established a psychological support service with specialized professionals. This service will continue until the safe return of the seafarers and will also be provided to the crew upon their return, as advised by medical professionals.

The St. Nikolas was en route to Turkey, carrying oil from Iraq when it was seized. This incident follows a previous seizure of the same vessel by the United States, as it was transporting oil to Iran amid sanctions. The ongoing situation highlights the complex geopolitical tensions in the region and the risks faced by seafarers in international waters.
