Deep Well Mishap Claims Life of 20-Year-Old on Samal Island

In a recent unfortunate event on Samal Island, a 20-year-old man tragically lost his life after falling into a 220-foot deep well under construction. The incident occurred on a Saturday in a privately owned lot in Barangay Cogon, Babak District. While the victim succumbed to his fall, a 16-year-old companion narrowly escaped the same fate, managing to hold on despite the collapse of the ladder used for the excavation.

Police Major Leo Alce, head of the Babak Police Sub-station, confirmed that the tragedy unfolded when the ladder in the deep well gave way. Authorities are currently investigating the purpose of the excavation and whether it had the necessary permits. Additionally, Igacos Mayor Al David Uy mentioned that part of the investigation will determine if the site was being used or intended for a treasure hunting operation, which also lacked permits.

This incident highlights the dangers associated with unregulated construction sites and the importance of adhering to safety protocols. The local government’s response and investigation into the matter reflect a commitment to ensuring public safety and adherence to legal requirements in construction activities.
