Devastating Surigao del Sur Earthquakes Result in P167M in Agricultural and Infrastructure Losses

The recent earthquakes in Surigao del Sur province of the Philippines have led to substantial agricultural and infrastructural damage, totaling P167 million in losses. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that the agricultural sector suffered damages amounting to P29.6 million, while infrastructure losses reached nearly P137.5 million as of December 8. These figures include extensive damage to 408 government facilities, 133 school buildings, and seven health facilities.

Additionally, the earthquakes, which occurred on December 2 and December 4 with magnitudes of 7.4 and 6.8 respectively, caused damage to 5,294 houses, of which 4,888 were partially destroyed. The quakes also impacted 11 agricultural facilities, machinery, and equipment, adversely affecting the livelihoods of 515 farmers.

As of December 8, the quakes affected 643,220 individuals or 162,946 families, including 7,630 displaced individuals in the Davao Region. Of these displaced individuals, 7,487 remained in evacuation centers, while 143 stayed elsewhere. The death toll from the earthquakes remained at three, but the number of injured rose to 65. In response, the national government has distributed over P49 million in aid to the affected residents, with contributions from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Office of the Civil Defense, along with local government units​​​
