Health Alert: Spike in Flu Cases in the Philippines Amid Relaxed COVID Rules

A health expert in the Philippines attributes the recent increase in flu-like illnesses to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and fluctuating weather conditions. The Department of Health (DOH) noted that although the surge has decelerated, over 180,000 cases were reported this month. Dr. Benito Atienza, Vice President of the Philippine Federation of Professional Associations, emphasizes the importance of masking up, especially considering the current climate, stress, and lack of rest among the populace. He notes the exposure risks in schools, where many children are unmasked and in close contact.

Dr. Atienza also advises the public to receive annual flu vaccinations, rather than waiting until year-end. The DOH is on high alert for new pathogens amidst the rise in illnesses, while Beijing has reported no novel pathogens in respiratory diseases spreading in northern China. The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) is closely monitoring developments and emphasizes the importance of following health protocols to prevent misinformation.
