Choco Mucho Triumphs Over PLDT, Secures Spot in PVL Semifinals

The Choco Mucho Flying Titans orchestrated an impressive comeback victory against PLDT, clinching their spot in the semifinals of the 2023 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) second All-Filipino Conference. Despite facing a daunting 0-5 deficit in the decisive fifth set, coach Dante Alinsunurin’s faith in his team remained unshaken. He chose not to call a timeout, allowing his players to strategize and find their way back into the game on their own​​.

Sisi Rondina played a pivotal role in reversing the team’s fortunes, contributing to Choco Mucho’s eighth consecutive win with a final score of 25-20, 23-25, 18-25, 25-17, 15-12. This victory not only showcased the team’s resilience but also ended their four-conference semifinal drought, improving their record to 8-1, just behind the unbeaten Creamline​​.

In the nail-biting deciding set, Choco Mucho gradually diminished PLDT’s lead. Key contributions from Caitlin Viray, Isa Molde, and Rondina shifted the momentum, allowing Choco Mucho to gain the upper hand. Maddie Madayag delivered the final blow with a game-winning block, concluding the match in an intense two hours and fourteen minutes​​.

The emotional triumph was evident as Rondina expressed her joy vocally, and Madayag was visibly moved to tears. Their performances were outstanding, with Rondina securing 20 points and 20 excellent receptions, and Madayag achieving a conference-high of 18 points, including three blocks and two aces. Setter Deanna Wong’s leadership was also crucial, contributing 24 excellent sets and three points. Alinsunurin acknowledged the collective effort of the players, coaching staff, and management in reaching the semifinals​​.

Despite securing a semifinal berth, Alinsunurin is focused on finishing the season strong with upcoming games against Gerflor and Chery Tiggo. Meanwhile, the loss for PLDT was a significant setback, placing them on the verge of elimination with a record of 5-4, tied with Akari and Petro Gazz​​.

PLDT’s performance was highlighted by Savannah Davison’s remarkable 31-point effort, Royse Tubino’s 16 points, and Erika Santos’ 13 points, demonstrating the team’s strong resistance despite the loss​​.
