Senator Imee Marcos Appeals for Mercy Amid Sara Duterte Impeachment Talks

Manila, Philippines: Senator Imee Marcos made an impassioned plea to those allegedly targeting Vice President Sara Duterte with impeachment discussions. Speaking in Navotas City, Marcos urged compassion for the nation, stating, “Have mercy on the Philippines.” She highlighted the multitude of problems facing the country, including the struggles of Filipinos unable to afford food amidst rising costs, and called for an end to political maneuvering born from ambitions for positions in 2025 and 2028.

Addressing questions about the relationship between her brother, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., and Vice President Duterte, Senator Marcos expressed confidence in their good terms, attributing complications to external agitators. President Marcos himself earlier stated that Duterte does not deserve impeachment, as per claims from lawmakers about discussions in the House of Representatives.

Additionally, Senator Marcos criticized a House resolution urging the government to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) probe into the “war on drugs” under former President Rodrigo Duterte. She questioned the rationale behind allowing foreign interference in national matters, emphasizing the functioning, free, and robust nature of the country’s courts. For her, allowing ICC investigators into the country would be a “shame,” equating it to surrendering the nation’s sovereignty.
