MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines Los Baños Interfraternity Council (UPLB IFC) issued a statement condemning hazing after the death of Adamson University student John Matthew Salilig.
John Matthew was reported missing on February 18, the same day the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity in Cavite City administered initiation rituals. He was later determined to have died from hazing-related injuries.
In a written statement, the UPLB Interfraternity Council has strongly condemned all types of violence associated with the fraternity.
“The University of the Philippines Los Baños Interfraternity Council (UPLB IFC) vehemently condemns all forms of fraternity-related violence and calls for all fraternities, sororities, and organizations to reject the tradition of hazing, not only in the accordance with the Republic Act No. 11053 or the Anti-Hazing Law, but in respect for basic human rights.”

In addition, the UPLB IFC issued a plea to the authorities, urging them to take prompt and decisive action against those responsible for the crime.
The proclamation of unity was signed by Tau Alpha, Beta Nu Epsilon, Beta Sigma, the Demolay Club, Epsilon Chi, the Society of Men, Sigma Rho, and Zeta Beta Phi.
Police have considered the death of John Matthew a “solved” case after the arrest of several members of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity and the filing of criminal complaints against them.
