MANILA, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed proclamation No. 84 on Wednesday, placing four hardly-hit regions in the country under a state of calamity due to the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (internatiol name: Nalgae).

According to the proclamation, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao will be in a state of calamity for six months unless earlier lifted by the President.

The declaration of a state of calamity will hasten the rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts of the government and private sector.

Along with this, the national and local government units can utilize appropriate funds for recovery efforts, and oversee the continuous provision of basic services and commodities in the affected areas and control their prices.

The President may also include other areas in the declaration if deemed necessary based on continuing damage assessment and recommendation by the NDRRMC.

As of writing, more than 1.4 million people in the said four regions were affected by the calamity.

Latest government data says the death toll due to the tropical cyclone is at 121, among which 92 deaths have been confirmed.

The brunt of Paeng had also resulted to an estimated P1.2 billion worth of damage to agriculture.
