From generating ads incorporated in your Facebook feed, to suggesting songs or playlists on Spotify; from providing digital assistants or chatbots to businesses, to providing computations to monitor changes in a person’s vital signs or detecting an earthquake, there is no doubt that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is prevalent in the world we live in today.
MANILA, Philippines – Aiming to keep up with the times and to hone relevant skills among its students, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman announced on July 28 the official launching of its first doctoral program in AI under the College of Engineering – a first in the Philippines.
The program will focus on “problem identification and understanding, obtaining a strong familiarity with state-of-the-art solutions, formulation of novel algorithms and techniques, and deployment of suitably advanced and highly reliable AI systems.”
According to UP’s post, the PhD program is open to AI industry practitioners who want to specialize and deploy state-of-the-art AI systems, researchers who want to extend their AI knowledge and invent the next big AI algorithm, and academics who want to offer AI programs in their own universities.
The university is offering 3 options to interested applicants on how they will take the course:
- Option A: MEngg-PhD (Straight) Program with Prior Bachelor’s Degree with Thesis (62 units including dissertation units)
- Option B: PhD Program with Prior Master’s Degree without Thesis (38 units including dissertation units)
- Option C: PhD Program with Prior Master’s Degree with Thesis (38 units including dissertation units)
As for students who may not have the appropriate undergraduate foundation courses, a diagnostic exam will be given after admission.
