COMELEC Received Over 1 Million New Voters

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Sunday that over one million new voters had recently registered for the December barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

Based on July 15 update, the number of new registrants has increased to 1,370,593, according to Comelec acting spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco.

Laudiangco said that out of the total 863,078 individuals aged 15 to 17, 435,266 individuals aged 18 to 30, and 72,249 are aged 31 and above.

COMELEC also got 227,203 requests to vote in the Barangay Elections in other cities or municipalities, while 2,655 in SK. There were also 61,751 applications for reactivation and 9,532 for reactivation and transfer.

The Comelec has likewise received appeals for transfer to other districts in the same city, transfer with reactivation and correction of entries, transfer with correction of entries, and reactivation with correction of entries. Some individuals also modify and update their names.

As of Friday, July 15, Comelec had processed more than 1.8 million applications.

Laudiangco urged the public to avoid the rush and register before the July 23 deadline. Except for holidays, barangay and SK voter registration is available Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
