MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has officially declared May 9, 2022 a special non-working holiday.
He signed Proclamation No. 1357, which states that the holiday will allow Filipinos to “properly exercise their right to vote.”

Prior to the president’s decision, COMELEC had already asked him to declare Elections Day as a holiday. COMELEC said that declaring it a holiday was necessary “to afford the registered voters the fullest opportunity to participate in the said election and exercise their right to vote.”
