The BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) Nurse of the Year was given to a Filipino nurse for helping his co-workers who fell ill due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Ariel Lanada, who came from Iloilo, is the chairman of the Filipino community in Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom.

During the height of the crisis, Lanada organized food distributions and helped his co-nurses who tested positive for COVID-19. With the help of a fellow Filipino, he was also able to give away more than 1,000 food packs to Oxford University Hospital in 4 weeks.

“It gave me great pride and boost of energy, nakaka-pride po na Filipino po ang nanalo,” he said.

“I would like to dedicate this award sa lahat ng Filipino nurses and BAME nurses’ colleagues in the United Kingdom,” he added.

Ariel Lanada served as proof that the Filipino Bayanihan exists even outside of the country’s borders.

“Sobrang proud po ako (I’m really proud) as a Filipino because we raise the profile and flag of the Philippines. Filipino nurses are recognized and respected throughout the world, especially dito sa (here in) UK,” Lanada said.

Lanada added that he was also working on his doctoral degree in education and that he was “heavily involved” in recruiting Filipino nurses to the UK.
