Hidilyn Diaz qualifies for Tokyo Olympics during Asian weightlifting championships

Hidilyn Diaz has qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in summer 2021 at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Diaz lifted a 90kg snatch on her second attempt and that was all she needed to book that ticket to Tokyo, and her fourth Olympic Games.

The Rio 2016 silver medallist and World No.2 is on a mission to win the Philippines’ first ever gold medal in any sport, after she became the first Filipina woman to win an Olympic medal in Rio.

It would be the crowning achievement of a lifetime’s work spent breaking down barriers and blazing a trail for Filipinos in the sport of weightlifting.

The weightlifting qualification rules for the Tokyo Olympics state the top-eight in the world rankings in each weight category as of April 30, 2021, will qualify for the Games.

Diaz, 30 is now confirmed as the country’s seventh Olympic qualifier joining boxers Eumir MarcialIrish MagnoNesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam, world champion gymnast Carlos Yulo, and pole vaulter EJ Obiena.
