Robert S. Trump, the younger brother of President Donald Trump, passed away Saturday night at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan for an undisclosed illness. He was 71.

“It is with heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight. He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace,”

Robert Trump, who took blood thinners, had experienced brain bleeds that began after a recent fall, according to a close friend of the family.

Over the past few weeks, he had not been able to speak on the phone, according to the family friend.

Donald Trump made a trip to Manhattan on Friday to see him at the hospital.

On Saturday, when Robert Trump was not expected to live much longer, President Donald Trump, 74, called into the hospital from his golf club. A short time later, the president held a wide-ranging news conference. He did not mention his brother’s health, but privately was down and struggling to understand the impending loss, according to friends who spoke to him.

“I have a wonderful brother,” the President said on Friday during a news conference at the White House before departing to visit him. “We’ve had a great relationship for a long time, from Day 1, a long time ago.”
