A disturbing wave of grave robberies has been reported at the City Memorial Park in Cagayan De Oro City, with several graves desecrated and exposed, leading to a severe public concern. The incidents were highlighted due to the unsettling sights and foul smells emanating from the damaged graves, where some bodies were found outside their resting places.
According to Cyril Chaves of GMA Regional TV News, the grave robberies have targeted the metal components of the tombs, particularly in the older sections of the cemetery. This has not only resulted in the physical damage to the graves but also disturbed the peace and dignity of those interred there.
The City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) acknowledges the recurring issue of metal theft in the cemetery. Last year, two individuals were arrested in connection to similar crimes, indicating an ongoing challenge in curbing these acts.
In response to the recent events, CLENRO Chief Engineer Armen Cuenca mentioned that security measures have been intensified, including the deployment of guards, especially at night, which is when most of the thefts occur. Cuenca has also called on relatives of the deceased whose graves have been vandalized to coordinate with his office, emphasizing the need for community involvement in addressing and preventing further violations.
The city’s efforts to protect its cemeteries are crucial in preserving the sanctity of these spaces and providing solace to the families of the departed.
