Pres. Marcos Grants Grace Period for E-Bikes and E-Trikes on National Roads in NCR

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has temporarily suspended the enforcement actions against e-bikes and e-trikes using national roads in Metro Manila. This decision comes in response to the need for a broader dissemination of information regarding the ban previously imposed on these electric vehicles on major thoroughfares.

In a statement issued this Thursday, the President directed the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and local governments in the Metro Manila area to provide a grace period for users of e-bikes, e-trikes, and other e-vehicles that were restricted from national roads. The exact duration of this grace period was not specified, but during this time, there will be no issuance of tickets, fines, or impounding of e-trikes.

President Marcos emphasized that any stops made during this period are intended to educate the riders about alternative routes they can use and to remind them of the new regulations aimed at enhancing safety and order on the streets.

This development follows the April 15 implementation of the Metro Manila Council’s directive, which banned e-bikes, e-trikes, and light electric vehicles (EVs) from about 20 national roads across the capital. The ban also includes tricycles, karitons, pedicabs, and kuligligs.

Violators of the ban are subject to a P2,500 fine, and vehicles may be impounded if they are unlicensed or unregistered. The allowed exceptions include crossing these roads to reach an adjacent street and tricycles making short trips of less than 500 meters to or from a U-turn slot to cross to the other side.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to regulate traffic and ensure the safety of both motorists and pedestrians on Metro Manila’s busiest roads.
